What is Teleworking?

Flexiplace is the abbreviated name for the
Federal Flexible Workplace Program.This program provides employees the opportunity to work all or part of the work week (generally on a regular basis) at alternative worksites away from their main worksite. Typically, the alternative worksite is the employee's home or a satellite work center geographically convenient to the employee's home. Working at an alternative worksite is called 'Teleworking' and such workers are called Teleworkers.

I work for the federal government, what steps are needed to initiate Teleworking (Flexiplace)?

Step 1:
Consult with your immediate supervisor for preliminary approval to start the process. 

Step 2: 
Contact your Telework Coordinator within your agency.

Step 3: 
Contact Southern Maryland Telework Centers at (301) 870-3008, ext. 7628  to obtain additional information and/or schedule a tour.



Can non-federal employees work at the centers?

What types of jobs or tasks are adaptable to Teleworking (Flexiplace)?
 
Generally, any job that has tasks which can be performed away from the main worksite. The teleworker and the supervisor determine which specific tasks are adaptable to teleworking.

Is teleworking  a good way to employ disabled persons?

Yes, for further information, please refer to GSA's Implementation Manual, Section III.
 

Is teleworking a viable option for employees undergoing extensive medical treatment?

Yes. Teleworking is an excellent way for employees to continue working while undergoing medical treatment. It is also an option for those employees who have to be relocated because of a “sick building” situation.

Who may participate in Teleworking (Flexiplace)?

Eligibility is determined in accordance with your agency's policy.

Can a supervisor participate in the flexible workplace program?  

Yes!

What are the centers hours?

Normal business hours are 8am-4pm, Monday thru Friday. However, Security Access cards are your access to the centers  24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
